The THEORY and HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST

You need to PASS your theory and hazard perception test at the same time before you can apply for your practical test. You will need a valid provisional driving licence to take your theory test and you can book your theory and hazard perception tests online.
You DO NOT however, need to have passed your Theory & Hazard perception tests, before taking lessons.
I will, as part of your training, help you prepare for the theory and hazard perception tests, and advise when you are ready to take them. At Ambrose Driving we also provide you with access to Theory Test Pro (click here), which enables you to take mock tests online.

How the HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST works:
Immediately after your theory test, you'll watch a series of 14 one minute video clips, each showing potential hazards involving road conditions, pedestrians or road users.
There are 15 hazards to identify and you can score up to 5 points on each one, depending on how quickly you identify them. You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass - don’t worry it is not as tough as it sounds!

How the THEORY TEST works:
The theory test is a 50-question multiple-choice test. To pass you must answer 43 or more questions correctly within 57 minutes. Questions are chosen at random from a bank of over 1,000 questions, and you answer by touching the screen. During the test you have the option to skip questions and return to them later.

The PRACTICAL TEST

When you are ready to take the practical test, you can book you test online, see video (left) from the DSA. I will let you know when to apply, when you skills have reached the correct standard to ensure you have the best chance of passing.

On the day of your TEST I will make sure we arrive in plently of time to ensure you can get yourself settled and calm, before taking your test, you will be nervous, but this is to be expected.

The driving test is straightforward and has been designed to see if you can drive safely in different road conditions and that you have learned your highway code.

You will meet your examiner and he will then inform you of what he will expect from you. Firstly you will have an eyesight check and then your examiner will ask you two questions about carrying out vehicle safety checks. These questions will be taken from the Show Me Tell Me questions and we will practice and learn these during your tuition.

In your practical test, you have 40 minutes to demonstrate everything you have learned in your driving lessons. You need to show you can drive competently and safely in all kinds of driving situations. You'll be asked to doone of two reversing manoeuvres which will will have practised and possibly make an emergency stop. To pass, you will need to complete the test without any serious faults and with 15 or fewer minor errors.

Be prepared!
The current national average practical pass rate is around 43%, so it makes sense to be as prepared as possible. I will advise you when you are ready for the practical test and help you understand the main reasons people fail.
